Android 11 now looks highly likely to officially launch on September 8, 2020. While the next version of Android is already available to some, it is a beta version. In addition, although the stable version might launch in September, that’s different to when the operating system will become available to individual Android device owners.

Android 11 was first announced earlier in the year when the developer version became available. Following this, Google released a beta version which offered access to members of the public with compatible phones. Since then, Google has been rolling out additional beta releases and will continue to do so right up until the release of the consumer-ready stable version.

While it had previously been expected that Google would release the stable version of Android 11 in the third quarter of this year, an exact data remained unknown. However, Google recently held an online event where it was detailing some of the improvements coming to the Google Assistant smart home experience. In one of the video presentations, a slide was shown that clearly indicated Google’s intention to launch the stable version of Android 11 on September 8. The video remained live for some time before being set to “private” on YouTube.

Android 11 Stable Launch Won’t Be For Everyone

Even though September 8, or thereabouts, now looks likely to be when when the stable version of Android 11 is made publicly available, that’s not to say it will become available to all Android users at that time. In fact, many Android devices won’t get upgraded to Android 11 at all, due to their age and device support limitations. As importantly, this version of Android relates to Google’s base version. As many manufacturers often add their own features and design tweaks, it typically takes them much longer to make a new version of Android available to their specific device users and owners.

Due to this, the September 8 date should be considered the start of the Android 11 upgrade rollout. From then on, whenever an individual device gets upgraded to the latest version of Android will depend on multiple factors, including the type of device, age, manufacturer, and in some cases, the carrier. For example, the September rollout will first apply to Google’s own Pixel phone line, and will then be followed by those manufacturers included in the developer program. Following which, the start of the year-round process of other manufacturers rolling out their specific Android 11 updates.

As to be expected, Android 11 comes with plenty of improvements compared to Android 10, including a greater focus on communications through messaging apps, as well as increased security and privacy controls, thanks to greater permission management. There are also a number of accessibility, smart home, and general improvements included with Android 11 as well.
